Hamza Ali / Backend developer

Java · Spring Boot · A little curiosity

Behind the scenes.
At the heart of it.

I’m Hamza Ali. I build useful backend systems that turn complex data into clear experiences, from pronunciation practice to connected healthcare workflows.

Different problems.
Thoughtful systems.

Understand the data. Define the boundaries. Build something useful.

Language & learning

SpeakRight

A little feedback. A better next sentence.

Leading the backend of a Flutter pronunciation-training app. Word-level and IPA phoneme-level feedback helps learners understand their spoken English and find the next useful practice session.

  • Spring Boot
  • Azure AI Speech
  • PostgreSQL / Supabase
  • JPA + Flyway
  • Flutter
Engineering details
  • Designed the schema for users, practice attempts, scores, and phoneme-level statistics using JPA and Flyway migrations.
  • Maintain an incremental average of per-user, per-phoneme accuracy to identify the three weakest phonemes across a 100-sentence corpus.
  • Implemented UCB1 adaptive selection: the first 50–60 attempts emphasize weaknesses, then exploration ramps in to surface unpracticed sentences.
  • Coordinate a team of three: two developers and one UI/UX designer, across backend, mobile, and design.

SofiCheck

Find what came before. Build what comes next.

A RAG-based service that checks proposed final year projects against archived department catalogues. Relevant historical work comes first; structured similarity ratings and explanations follow.

  • Spring AI
  • Qdrant
  • ONNX embeddings
  • Groq
  • MongoDB
  • React + TypeScript
Engineering details
  • Ingested PDFs into Qdrant with local ONNX embeddings for titles, abstracts, and metadata.
  • Integrated Groq-hosted chat models through Spring AI’s OpenAI-compatible client.
  • Recorded request dates, times, and token usage in MongoDB through a Spring AI advisor.
  • Served 187 requests with 200 OK responses during a 30-day Azure free-trial deployment, against an expected 50 from one student batch.
  • Built the Vercel-hosted frontend with backend health checks, draft autosave, local query history, and parsed result cards.

187 successful requests / 30-day trial. Current backend availability is not assumed.

03 / Event-driven systemsNovember–December 2025

Event-driven systems

PulseTrack

One event. Many independent paths.

A distributed healthcare backend where patient creation triggers billing, analytics, and notifications. User-facing requests don’t have to wait for every downstream consumer.

  • Spring Boot
  • Kafka
  • gRPC
  • JWT
  • Docker
  • PostgreSQL
Engineering details
  • Separated core operations into independent Spring Boot services to improve fault isolation.
  • Used Kafka for asynchronous event consumption and gRPC for internal interactions requiring explicit contracts.
  • Centralized JWT-based authentication and request routing at the system boundary.
  • Containerized services with Docker and tested concurrent request patterns to identify bottlenecks.

Real codebases. Review feedback. The details between an endpoint and a usable application.

Remote

FlyRank AI

Back-End AI Engineering Intern

Built CRUD REST services with input validation and explicit status codes; containerized an application with Docker for consistent local and review environments.

More about the role
  • Diagnosed bugs in an existing codebase and worked through Git-based code review feedback.
  • Completed a track assignment with Supabase Auth signup/login, bearer-token middleware, and Swagger UI.
  • Worked with background jobs: return 202 immediately, run work in a worker, and expose results through a status endpoint.

Octaloop Technologies

React Native Intern / Docspot

Developed Docspot’s Spring Boot backend for appointment data, authentication, and MongoDB persistence.

More about the role
  • Integrated real-time in-app calling and verified authentication and data consistency between the mobile client and backend.
  • Implemented React Native screens with API consumption and state management for user-facing workflows.

03 / Open source

Small fixes.
Shared progress.

Reading unfamiliar code, tracing the problem, and leaving a project a little better than I found it.

01

OtterMind Chat2DB

Data that stays saved.

Fixed BigQuery datasource persistence: project, email, and keyfile fields were dropped on save. Added them to the DataSource entity and update request.

PR #2179 · Merged / Closes #2178

02

OtterMind Chat2DB

A clearer connection.

Wrote a source-verified BigQuery connection guide covering service-account setup, JDBC configuration, and troubleshooting.

PR #2054 · Merged

03

secure-backup

Security, made usable.

Added a secure passphrase generator using crypto.getRandomValues, plus clipboard copying with a fallback for restricted webviews.
